General Waste
General waste collected by our suppliers is never taken directly to Landfill. Material will go to either a WtE plant (Waste to Energy Incinerator), a RDF plant (Refuse Derived Fuel) where material is sorted, shredded and baled to then send to Waste to Energy plants, a MRF (Materials Recycling Facility) or an SRF plant (Solid Recovered Fuel). Effectively all General waste is sent to create energy.
This ongoing programme involves:
- Recycling waste is processed usually in a MRF, where it goes through the plant and this process removes any items which can be recycled – such as glass, cardboard, plastics, newspapers and paper etc. Anything that can be recycled is subsequently treated accordingly after this initial segregation process.
- The “residual” waste that can’t be recycled is sent to various locations around the UK for onwards processing as Waste to Energy.
- All food waste is taken to an AD (Anaerobic Digestion) plant where the material is processed and subsequently is either used to create energy or is sent as feed for land and farms.
- All the sanitary waste and nappy waste, classed as offensive, is taken and is incinerated which is the required process for this type of waste. Everything that is burnt though is used for energy in this process.
This is an on-going endeavour that reflects our commitment to finding workable environmental management solutions across our festivals whilst meeting the logistical challenges we face as a touring festival as different locations have different recycling/waste collection options.
